National Hold the Door Day

I am declaring Dec. 23rd, 2008 the first ever national "Hold the Door Day".
A few years ago at Christmas time, hubby and I were at the mall doing some last minute shopping-stroller in tow and having a little bit of a rough time getting through the crowds. People were generally not so much rude, as just non-observant. We felt invisible. On the way home that afternoon we had the "what would you do if you had a million dollars" conversation. We both decided that if we had a million dollars, we would withdraw 100K and take it to the mall a few days before Christmas and hand over 1000.00 to anybody who said "excuse me", held the door for us, wished us a "Merry Christmas" ( not a Happy Holiday...that wouldn't count) or in any other way displayed some courtesy and holiday cheer.

Well...we don't have a million dollars...darn it. But we do have the ability to spread the word! ( And we might even have 20 bucks or so to invest in chocolate bars or some other inexpensive but unexpected reward) And so I am officially declaring Dec 23rd to be "Hold the Door Day"...try it, see what happens! ( make it extra special by wishing somebody Merry Christmas too.)

What a great idea! People just don't seem to be as courteous as they used to be. I'm spreading the word!

This is a great idea... when my sons open a door I hurry and run through it and then say "Thanks for holding the door for a lady!" (even if I surprised them by rushing through) just to remind them...and they are getting better at it.

That's a great idea! We'll do it! My boys would love this challenge. Hopefully if they become aware of others around they wouldn't be at each other....as much.

So, I belong to this etiquette message board. Some of the discussions are traditional etiquette things, but most is how to handle rude people, or be more polite, etc.

There's a thread going on about a woman who held the door for an elderly couple, and was chewed out by the woman. Several people told her she was wrond and probably made them uncomfortable for standing there, holding the door! It made me so sad. People are so mean sometimes.

I can't tell you how many times I'm almost to the door and there's a guy there who almost holds it open and then apparently changes his mind at the last second. Couldn't he has almost waited a millisecond?

The BEST idea for the holidays I've heard in a VERY long time! I think we are joining in Girly! Thank you for the inspiration.
Have a happy day!

Oooh. It's number 99 this year. 23 dec 1909. Next year's the big day. JW turns 8 that same day. It will be a big one at our house for both reasons.

oops, mina, you are right. Kristina...do I understand correctly that on an Etiquette board people told somebody they were WRONG for holding a door? Holy smokes! And to everybody else who's thinking of joining in, also, feel free to "publicly" join in...spread the word. Lets prove it doesn't take a million dollars to do something that creates a positive experience.
